How Much Does It Cost To Refinish Hardwood Floors? Click Here To Find Out

The costs to refinish hardwood floors for the do it yourselfer.

The items you need for the job of refinishing the hardwood floors are not terribly expensive, but remember that the larger the floor is; the more of each item you will need. Let’s have a look at what those things are, and see how much it will all cost

Renting two sanders, an upright floor sander, and a hand- held belt sander

You will need a floor sander and a belt sander, and you can rent both of those for one day, and you should be able to get all of the sanding done in one day. If you already have one or both of these sanders, great, but I am going g to assume that you do not, and will price the rentals accordingly. Renting the two belt sanders with all of the appropriate sandpapers to go with them should run somewhere in the neighborhood of $125.00 to $155.00 per day. If they are a lot more than this, you should look elsewhere for your rentals. Always call the rental store first to verify that they have the machines in the store, and check around for pricing. Make sure that you have everything prepared so that you can get your sanding completed in one day and be able to return the machinery within the time allotted, in order to avoid being charged for two days.

Now for the materials needed

  • Polyurethane sealant, $45.00
  • Polyurethane floor finisher, $95.00
  • Mineral Spirits  $10.00
  • A good 4 inch paintbrush $10.00
  • A clean, soft bristled push broom $20.00

Remember that these prices are just averages, and are based on a floor with linear dimensions of 15×18 feet. There are a large array of products available to the do- it -yourselfer, I highly recommend using the better, or higher end materials. Your hardwood floor re-finishing project should last as long as it possibly can, so go into the project expecting to pay for the better materials. You owe it to yourself and your floor to do that. Think of all of the money you will save doing it yourself, and treat yourself to the finest products.

If you want, hire someone to help you with the project, and incorporate that into your floor re-finishing budget.

Go ahead and get some help if the job is big enough, or if you are doing more than one floor. An extra set of hands can be incredibly helpful, and speed the entire process up dramatically. You will still be way ahead financially, so plan on doing just that. The average cost of re-finishing a 15×18 floor for the professionals will set you back at least $900.00, so it might be very worth it to hire some help. If you have problems with heavy lifting or being on your knees for extended periods of time, help may be not a luxury, but a necessity, so proceed with getting the help that you need. Being a do it yourself type should not create a back or knee problem for you.
